Shanghai Guangming High School, located in Huangpu District, is a renowned, century-old school with strong traditions. It was established by the French in 1886. Known first as “Zhongfa Xue Tang”, then as “Zhongfa School,” it was finally renamed “Guangming High School” in 1951. It has been designated as a model “demonstrative” high school – a key high school in Shanghai since 2005.
The current principal of the school is Mr. Mu Xiaojiong, a Special Grade teacher. There are over 120 in-service staff, 80% of whom are senior teachers. The school prides itself on the commitment and experience of its teachers, who have achieved prominence in education and instruction.
The educational philosophy of Guangming is one of harmonious and humanitarian development; the pedagogical principle is “teaching according to the student’s ability.” The school encourages its students to become talented adults who also have practical abilities, citizens with a spirit of innovation who show social responsibility and have a healthy outlook on life.
Guangming High School is one of three government-appointed schools in Shanghai to establish bilingual experimental classes in French and Chinese. These classes are taught in each grade by native speakers of French. In addition, the school has established friendly relationships, including visits, exchanges, and frequent communications, with high schools in France, the United States, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Canada, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. The students therefore are exposed to the world beyond their borders.
